This position of SUPERVISORY IMMIGRATION SERVICES OFFICER starts at a salary of $57,408.00 (GS-11 step 1), with promotion potential to $89,450.00 (GS-12 step 10). The duties described are for the full-performance level. At developmental grade levels, assignments will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence, and limited complexity.
As a Supervisory Immigration Services Officer, you will supervise staff responsible for interpreting, applying, and enforcing intricate policies, regulations, procedures, and legislation within the complex domain of Immigration and Nationality Law. You will:
- Provide supervision to officers and clerical staff as well as adjudicate applications and petitions for various benefits and privileges allowed under the law. Also conducts required management and supervisory reviews aimed at ensuring benefits and other services are being granted to the right people, in the right manner.
- Reviews and adjudicates benefit cases having substantial impact nationally or internationally on a full range of cases involving benefit issues such as naturalization, citizenship and birth abroad, derivative citizenship, congressional grants of nationality or expatriation and repatriation. Prepares and presents a full range of legal documents relevant to the adjudications of migration cases
- Observes workers performance; demonstrates and conducts work performance critiques. Provides formal and informal feedback and periodically evaluates employee performance. Resolves informal complaints and grievances. Develops work improvement plans, recommending actions as necessary. Provides advice and counsel to workers related to work and administrative matters. Effects disciplinary measures as appropriate to the authority delegated in this area. Reviews and approves or disapproves leave requests. Assures that subordinates are trained and fully comply with the provisions of the safety regulations.
- Provides appropriate training for employees to ensure that they meet the agreed upon performance requirements and to provide opportunity for career development.

GS-11: You qualify at the GS-11 level if you possess: One (1) year of specialized experience, equivalent to at least the GS-9 level in the federal government, which has equipped you with the skills needed to successfully perform the duties of the position. You must have experience performing the following duties:
- Make final determinations on immigration benefit cases by determining credibility, analyzing evidence and applying statutory requirements, regulations and judicial and administrative precedents. Prepares denials establishing facts on which final adjudication were based. OR
- You may substitute a doctoral degree (PhD or equivalent degree) or three full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in any field, or L.L.M. if related for experience at the GS-11 grade level. Such education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. Check with your school to determine how many credit hours comprise three years of graduate study. If that information is not available, use 54 semester or 81 quarter hours.
GS-12: In addition to the requirements at the lower grade level(s), you qualify at the GS-12 level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience, equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the federal government, which has equipped you with the skills needed to successfully perform the duties of the position. You must have experience performing the following duties:
- Renders final adjudication on highly complex applications and petitions, revokes parole status, or grants continuances in cases of substantial impact or high visibility.
- Independently initiates complete reexaminations of findings fact, documentary evidence, and other information pertaining to cases under appeal.
- Determines whether proceedings were initiated in accordance with due process.

Supervisory/Managerial Probationary Period: You may be required to serve a twelve -month probationary period upon appointment to this position. You may also be required to complete an appropriate supervisory training course within one year of assignment to this position.
Training: If you have not already done so, you will be required to attend a residential USCIS Officer training course. This technical training must be successfully completed according to the standards of the agency. Failure to do so will be grounds for mandatory removal from the position. Such failure will result in either reassignment to a different position, demotion, or separation by appropriate procedures.
