Note:  The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-5.  The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-4 to GS-5.  The Professional Standards Board (a peer-review group) will review the selected candidate’s education and experience and recommend the grade and step at which the candidate will be placed.  The salary is based on the grade and step approved for the selected candidate.

This position serves as a medical support assistant in the Radiology Service Line in White River Junction VA Medical Center, and is under the supervision of the Chief Radiologic Technologist.   Occupation involves technical work concerned with processing CDs with patient images andreports, and scheduling patient appointments.  Work requires practical knowledge of medical terminology and procedures common to each modality, department procedures for the scheduling of patient appointments, and HIPAA procedures regarding release of patient information. Analytical ability, judgment, discretion, and dedication to customer service are required on a daily basis to carry out the functions of this position.

 

Duties include but are not limited to:

 

* Receives telephone calls via the automated call distribution (ACD) system from internal and external customers in timely manner.

 

* Schedules patients for radiology tests in accordance with Service procedures and policies; and instructs patients on standard preparation procedures required prior to testing (i.e. liquid intake, medications, dietary instructions, lab tests,etc).  

 

* Schedules appointments in the scheduling package; avoiding conflicts with other scheduled appointments within the Service, and other Medical Center services.

 

* Burns images to CD from Picture Archiving Computer System (PACS) digitized workstation following departmental and medical-center wide policies.  

 

* The work is performed under stressful situations, in that the incumbent must be able to cope with difficult personalities and heavy workloads, which requires strict attention to detail and independent resolution of day-to-day problems .

All applicants must meet the following requirements in order to be considered at the GS-04 level and above:

GS-04, Applicants who meet at least one of the following requirements may qualify for position as this grade level:

  • 1 year of general experience performing progressively responsible clerical, office or other work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled; OR
  • Successfully completed education 2 years above high school, in any field, this education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school; OR
  • Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total experience requirements, only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement.

GS-05, Applicants who meet at least one of the following requirements may qualify for positions at this grade level:

  • 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-4 level such as working in a medical office setting with responsibility for working with patient eligibility, patient related data management computer systems, and working with patient benefits coordination. Additional examples include: maintaining clinical records and files, entering and obtaining health data, scheduling and coordinating patient appointments, interviewing patients to obtain demographic and insurance information, answering routine and recurring inquiries and maintaining patient confidentiality.; OR
  • Successfully completed education four years above high school level in any field, this education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school; OR
  • Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total experience requirements, only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement.
